Obituary

George Johnson was on December 12, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana to William Henry and Lillie Mono Johnson. He was christened at St. Peter Clavar Catholic Church of New Orleans, LA where George attended St. Peter Clavar Catholic School completing elementary through middle school. Afterwards, he graduated from Joseph S. Clark Senior High School of New Orleans, LA, with the class of 1949. George was married for 45 years to Ollie Mae Standifer Johnson, the love of his life. Mr. Johnson retired from the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier after 30 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers where his served as Sergeant of Arms for many years, Vice President of the State and Local AFL, CIO, President of the A Phillip Randolph Institute, President of the Ebonites Social Aide and Pleasure Club, President of Agriculture Street Landfield, President of Garden Plaza Homeowner's Association. He was member of Hartzell United Methodist Church until he relocated by way of Hurricane Katrina to Tupleo, MS. Upon relocating, Mr. Johnson joined the St. Paul Methodist Church of Tupelo, MS where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board until his health failed. He leaves to cherish his memories loving wife of 45 years, Ollie Mae Standifer Johnson, eight children, Roy Johnson (Irene) of Seattle, WA, Antoinette Johnson and Deborah Johnson Phillips of Houston, TX, Keith Johnson of New Orleans, LA, Darryl Johnson (Chelsea) of Baton Rouge, LA, Billy Gill, Carlotta Gill Spruille, and Larry Gill of New Orleans, LA, 44 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, a special friend James Agnew and many nieces, nephews, and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Peter Jones; three sisters: Louise Spurlock, Lilly Edwards, and Edna Williams; four sons: Edward Johnson, George Johnson, Atwell and Sammie Lee Thornton; one daughter Cynthia Bouie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Paul United Methodist Church.
