Obituary

On September 6, 1935 in Monroe County, Mississippi, an all-wise God gave the precious gift of a baby boy, Charlie Clinton Stegall, to Riley and Ester Bell (McKinney) Stegall. Devout Christians, Ester and Riley made certain church was a strong part of their children's lives. They chose New Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church as the temple to develop the spiritual foundation of the entire family. Soon after, Charlie came to know the goodness of Christ for himself and made Him his personal Savior. Charlie spent much of his life proclaiming the message of Christ through music. Music was his gift from God, and he shared that gift with others from city to city and state to state. He committed much of his time to "The Willing Sons Gospel Group" and is best known for his spirit-filled renditions of songs like, "He's Everything I Need", "The Time is Now" and "Don't Nobody Love the Lord Like I Do." Everyone who has ever heard "The Willing Sons" will surely remember Charlie and Dudley McKinney's soul-stirring version of the song, "Jesus You've Been Good to Me". His "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" spread throughout the community, and Charlie's melodious sounds will never be forgotten. In the latter years of his life, Charlie happily enjoyed his membership with Poplar Springs C.M.E. Church and a continued fellowship with New Chapel C.M.E. Church. Another passion Charlie held dear to his heart was his love for his life partner, and wife of 49 years, Evelyn (Evans) Stegall. Charlie and Evelyn were united in holy matrimony on August 13, 1961. Their union grew stronger through the years as they lived out the true meaning of "in sickness and in health, for better or worse, till death do us part." To their union were born the apples of Charlie's eyes- two Daddy's girls, Charla and Letricia (Tree). His bond with his daughters was a strong one and will remain in their hearts forever. On Sunday, February 13, 2011, Charlie made a peaceful transition to his heavenly home with GOD. Charlie's memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife, Evelyn; two children: Letricia French (Rufus) of Amory and Ms. Charla Stegall-Young of Louisville, Ky; and four children he helped to raise: Patricia Ann Evans and Stanley Evans (Sheila) both of Tupelo, MS, Shirley Booker (Charles) of Nashville, TN, and Larry Evans of Texas; two sisters: Emma Stegall of Amory, MS and Jimmie Perks of Smithville, MS. He also had a special brother-in-law, Johnnie L. Young; an aunt, Clevis Owens of Houston, MS and many grandchildren, cousins, a host of nieces, and nephews.
