On Monday, May 10, 2021, Jimmie Lee Young, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep. Jimmie L. “Baye” Young, Jr. was born on Tuesday, October 15, 1935 to Jimmie Lee and Ruby Odea Smith Young in Tupelo, Mississippi. Baptized into Saint Paul United Methodist Church at an early age, Baye remained a devoted and faithful member of the congregation who served in numerous capacities until his health failed. Jimmie graduated from George Washington Carver High School located in Tupelo in 1953. The following fall he began his collegiate journey at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College in Lorman, MS. In 1957, he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Industrial Education, followed by a Master’s of Science degree in 1975 from Mississippi State University. Jimmie went on to lead a diverse career in education and administration for over 40 years. On January 18, 1958, Baye married the love of his life Helen Louise Davis. Helen and Baye enjoyed 63 years of marriage. GOD showed his favor on this beautiful union with the birth of their four children-Jimmie III “Little Baye,” Angela Marie, Samuel Julius, and Harriet Ruchelle. Jimmie Lee Young III preceded him in death. Jimmie was an entrepreneur. He and his wife Helen owned and operated “Young’s Barbeque and Mini Mart” on North Spring Street in Tupelo for many years. Jimmie enjoyed barbequing for his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a skilled pitmaster and brick mason throughout Northeast Mississippi. Jimmie’s impeccable works of brick masonry can be seen throughout the community. A man with boundless gifts was many things to different people. Jimmie was a husband, a father, a brother, a mentor and a pillar of the community. To continue his legacy, Jimmie leaves his beloved wife Helen, his children Angela, Samuel, Harriet (Vincent). Grandchildren: Ryan, Jamahl (Tylease), Zachary, Havanna, Trey, Maulana, and Sabir. Great-Grandchildren: Zion, Jade, and Kyngston. Sisters: Rowena Young Fielder (Arthur “AJ”), and Nettie Young Davis; Brothers-in-Law: Quenton L. Davis, Sr. (Marcia). Cottrell Davis, Sr. Jimmie leaves behind many relatives, loved ones, friends, former students, and colleagues to cherish his memory. Special love and gratitude is dedicated to his caregivers Emma Gates Bowers, Frances Shields Heavens, Crystal Griffin, Jasmine Bogan, Tasha Morris, and Dr. Norris V. Crump.
